Thursday 4 February - Jardin des Serres d'Auteuil

Sign in a metro car
The gardens and greenhouses of Auteuil are another park we have not visited before.  Situated quite close to the Albert Kahn Museum and Gardens we visited yesterday, Auteuil is similar to Kew gardens although not so extensive.  The greenhouses date back to a similar period when exotic specimens were being brought back to Europe from the tropics. The gardens are laid out formally but much of the interest lies in the houses which are set out thematically, palms, desert plants, bromeliads etc.  Several of the houses included water features and it is evident that a great deal of thought and effort has gone into the development and maintenance of the houses.

The large, central, house contains some enormous trees as well as several ponds, all containing a variety of fish including some very large carp or koi type.  One section includes a large cage with a lot of budgerigars and other similar sized colorful birds.

We decided on a late lunch at the Burguignon du Marais near the St. Paul metro.  The steak (Mary) and kidneys (Colin) were very good indeed.

It has been raining lightly on and off all day.  Not enough to bother us.  A man had set up on the rue de Levis selling umbrellas.  Of course he is only out on rainy days.
